Betting Odds Explained

Every price on this site is a decimal odd. Here is what the number means, how to turn it into a probability, and what the common markets — 1X2, handicap, over/under — actually pay.

What decimal odds mean

Decimal odds show the total return for each unit staked, stake included. A NPR 1,000 bet at 1.85 returns NPR 1,850 if it wins: NPR 850 profit plus your NPR 1,000 back. At 3.40 the same stake returns NPR 3,400.

Lower odds mean the bookmaker rates that outcome as more likely. A price of 1.25 is a strong favourite; 6.00 is an outsider.

From odds to probability

The implied probability of a price is 1 ÷ odds. Odds of 2.00 imply 50%, 1.50 implies 66.7%, 4.00 implies 25%.

Add up the implied probabilities of all outcomes in a market and you get slightly more than 100%. The extra is the bookmaker's margin. On our match cards we remove it, so the probabilities shown always total exactly 100% — a cleaner read of what the market expects.

A bet is only good value when your own estimate of the chance is higher than the price implies.

Common markets

1X2 (match result)

1 is a home win, X a draw, 2 an away win. In limited-overs cricket draws are so rare that the market is usually just 1 and 2.

Double chance: 1X, X2, 12

You cover two of the three results. 1X wins if the home side wins or draws. The odds are lower because you are more likely to win.

Handicap

One side gets a head start or a deficit. "Arsenal −1.5" wins only if Arsenal win by two goals or more. "Chelsea +1.5" wins if Chelsea win, draw or lose by one. A handicap of 0 means your stake is returned if the match is drawn.

Total (over/under)

You bet on the combined score. "Over 2.5 goals" needs three goals or more. In cricket, totals are usually on runs, for example "Over 320.5 runs" across both innings of a T20 match.

Why odds change

Prices move with money and news: injuries, the toss, the pitch, rain forecasts and line-ups. We refresh odds four times a day (9:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 18:00 NPT), so always confirm the price on the bet slip before placing a bet.
